Pipe and Tube Polishing Services

Stainless steel pipe polishing is an important process for manufacturers and architectural applications. Polishing stainless steel pipes creates a uniform surface finish, which is necessary for some applications. Penn Stainless inventories some polished pipe, making Rapid Delivery a feasible option. Please contact us with any questions you have! If you do not see a particular finish listed, it is likely that we can procure it for you.

The process for finishing a pipe or tube with 2B mill finish begins with the steel being cold rolled, soften, and descaled. Then, a ‘pinch pass,’ a lighter pass, of polish. The final pass produces the smooth, bright, surface. This finish is suitable for many stainless steel applications. Common uses include non decorative or functional sheet products, industrial refrigeration equipment, and chemical plant and plumbing fixtures.

No. 4 Finish is applied with short, parallel polishing lines. These lines extend evenly along the length of the coil. Depending on specifications, the end finish can be between 120 to 320 grit. High grit numbers make for finer polishing lines and more reflective finishes. The surface coarseness is typically Ra 25 micro-inches or less. This is a general-purpose finish, and is commonly used for  kitchen/restaurant, food processing, and dairy equipments.

No. 6 Finish is a dull, silver white finish with smaller linear polishing lines. It is less reflective than No. 4 finish, and was commonly used for stainless steel architecture from 1930-80. It is no longer made by toll polishing houses, but custom fabricators occasionally use it for small projects.

No. 7 Finish is has a mirror-like finish. Fine polishing lines can sometimes be seen from several feet away. This finish is often used for decorative purposes, such as trim, column covers, or wall panels.

No. 8 Finish is the most reflective finish covered by ASTM standards. Products with #8 finish are buffed for 5-10 minutes more than products finished with #7 finish, making the grit lines less visible. The finish is almost as reflective as an authentic mirror.
