Pipe Specification – ASTM A270


This specification discusses  grades of seamless, welded, and heavily cold worked austenitic and ferritic/austenitic stainless steel sanitary tubing. Seamless tubes must be manufactured without any welding. Welded tubes must be made using an automated welding process and no filler metal. Heavily cold worked tubes must be made by applying cold working 35% or greater reduction of thickness for both the wall and weld, prior to the final anneal. All material shall be furnished in the heat-treated condition. A chemical analysis of either one length of flat-rolled stock or one tube shall be made for each heat. Each tube must undergo a reverse flattening test, hydrostatic test, or nondestructive electric test. Mill finish, mechanically polished surface finish, finish No. 80, finish No. 120, finish No. 180, finish No. 240, electropolished finish, and maximum roughness average surface finish are all allowed finishes. Longitudinally polished finish may only be done on the inside, but a circumferential polished finish can be done on the inside and/or the outside of the tube.
