Nickel Alloy Pipe Specification – ASTM B474

Overview

This specification governs electric fusion welded pipe used in high-temperature or corrosive environments. There are five distinct classes covered under ASTM B474: Class 1, Class 2, Class 3, Class 4 and Class 5. Each Class outlines the type of welding and xray that is required. The purchaser should select the class when quoting or ordering to this specification.  Full penetration welding is required as is heat treatment.  Mechanical testing is also required.

  • Class 1—Pipe to be double welded with filler metal; the entire weld will be x-ray.
  • Class 2—Pipe to be double welded with filler metal; no x-ray  is required.
  • Class 3—Pipe to be single welded with filler metal; the entire weld will be x-ray.
  • Class 4—Same as Class 3 but the weld pass exposed to the inside of the pipe surface does not require the addition of filler metal.
  • Class 5—Pipe to be double welded with filler metal;  the weld area on the pipe will undergo spot x-ray.
